Continuing Education (CEUs) and Professional Development Units (PDUs)

CEUs – Who needs them?

  •  BCBA (32 hours required per two years)
  •  BCaBA (20 hours required in addition to at least 5% supervision)

Why they’re required

  •  Maintain certification
  • Learn updated ABA strategies
  • Stay ethical and compliant
  •  Meet licensure requirements (some states)

Typical CEU requirements (BACB)

  • BCBA: 32 CEUs every 2 years
  •  Must include:

  1.  4 ethics CEUs
  2. 3 supervision CEUs (if supervising RBTs)

  •  RBTs will eventually need 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs)
  •  Over a 2-year recertification cycle
  •  This replaces the annual competency-assessment-only model

This comes from the updated proposed RBT certification standards:

  •  12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) required during each two-year cycle
  • RBTs must “ensure you have completed the 12 PDUs before your recertification date
  •  Guidance documents confirm 12 hours of professional development units during their two-year recertification cycle
